Case Study

The Challenge

Cut plan optimizer is a scientific application that requires a mathematical model with reasonable approximations to simplify the calculations. In addition to software development, DevBranch developed all the formulas for our client.
Cut Plan Optimizer was also supposed to provide both 2D and 3D views of the log, timber beams being cut and the saw lines. There were many rules that had to be considered such as how the saws had to be placed, how different grades of had to beconsidered, what if horizontal saw had to be used etc.
Application was supposed to provide an array of dimensions and data such as overall width and height, radius of the circle that passes furthermost corners of the plan, amount of saw dust produced, amount of saw chips produced etc.

The Solution

DevBranch developed a mathematical model and came up with a rule based design that facilitated many rules mentioned above to be implemented in a neat way. Application provides both 2D and 3D views of the log and provides many data such as sawdust volume chip volume, green volume, various dimensions, fully automatic saw, chipper selection and placement in the cut plan.

Also it provides full and partial drawing assistance, warnings in the form of messages, color changes and dimension warnings, if the log is skewed and the part of the beam protrudes out due to the curvature where it exactly protrudes out and many more

Application also communicates with many other systems such as sales systems and provides order data so that user doesn’t have to switch between applications to find details he wants. Once the cut plan is completed user can send the plan to the sawmill electronically with a click of a button.

The Results

Fully integrated system that allows users to easily create a cut pattern that optimizes the yield and therefore maximizes the revenue out of each log. Both 2D and 3D visualization of the plan so that user has a clear understanding about how the log will be cut before he send the plan to the mill. Ultimately a very useful product that serves the core needs of this large company.
